NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 25 – Tumor metastasis takes place by way of lymphatic vessels at the tumor margins, without the need for functional intratumoral vessels, investigators from Harvard Medical School report.
These marginal vessels, as well as the growth factor that promotes their development, thus appear to be ideal therapeutic targets.
As they describe in the online edition of Science for April 25, Dr. Rakesh K. Jain and associates transduced murine fibrosarcoma and melanoma cell lines with a gene that overexpressed vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C). When implanted into mice, both cell lines exhibited increased lymphatic vessel diameter in the tumor margin and enhanced lymphatic metastasis.
