Lidocaine May Be Effective Against Severe Steroid-Dependent Asthma

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 23 – Japanese researchers have found that lidocaine has immunoregulatory effects on T cells, which might make lidocaine an anti-inflammatory agent for treating severe steroid-dependent asthma.
Dr. Kenji Minoguchi and colleagues, from Showa University School of Medicine, Tokyo, isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and CD4+ T cells from six patients who had asthma and were allergic to house dust mite. The researchers cultured the PBMCs with or without lidocaine for 7 days and then stained the cells with propidium iodide. They also cultured CD4+ T cells with or without lidocaine, following by staining with trypan blue.
