NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 18 – Stationary-bicycle exercise during hemodialysis is safe and can significantly reduce blood pressure medication use, according to a report in the April issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
"Most hemodialysis patients require antihypertensive therapy," Dr. Brent W. Miller, of Barnes-Jewish Hospital Dialysis Center, St. Louis, and colleagues note. The researchers examined the effect of a stationary cycling program on blood pressure control and costs in 40 patients who agreed to exercise during each hemodialysis treatment, compared with 35 control patients who declined.
