Foradil Aerolizer (Formoterol) More Effective Than Theo-Dur (Theophylline) in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

EAST HANOVER, NJ — April 11, 2002 — Long-term treatment with Foradil® Aerolizer (formoterol fumarate inhalation powder) is more effective and better tolerated than treatment with oral slow-release Theo-Dur® (theophylline) in patients with symptomatic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to a new study published in the April issue of Chest, the official publication of the American College of Chest Physicians.

"One of the most important things we can do for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is to control their symptoms and improve management of their disease on a daily basis. Since treatment guidelines recommend bronchodilators as the first line of therapy in COPD, physicians and patients need to be aware of the differences between medications," said Bernard Levine, MD, clinical professor of medicine, University of Arizona, who was an investigator on the study and co-author of the paper. "This study confirms the long-term efficacy of Foradil Aerolizer used twice daily in controlling COPD symptoms and shows that treatment with Foradil Aerolizer is superior to theophylline therapy."
