Statin use lowers risk of mortality during bacteremic infection

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Statins have a potential clinical role in bacteremic infection, according to a review of cases at Veterans' Affairs Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Dr. Gary L. Simon, of George Washington University Medical Center, and colleagues evaluated clinical outcomes of patients who developed bacteremic infection between 1995 and 2000. Included were 243 episodes of aerobic gram-negative bacteremia and 145 episodes of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. As reported in the October 15th issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases, 35 patients were taking a statin drug during hospitalization.

Only two patients taking statins (6%) died during hospitalization, compared with 100 of 353 patients not taking statins (28%), a significant difference (p = 0.002). The mortality rate directly attributable to the infection was also significantly lower (3% versus 20%, p = 0.01). Only statin use was associated with decreased mortality in a multivariate analysis that included age, comorbid conditions, other medications, site of infection, and vital signs.

Dr. Simon and his associates speculate that statins may reduce inflammation by reducing the level of isoprenoids, thus inhibiting the prenylation reaction and reducing cellular activity. They note that statins are also recognized as inhibitors of neutrophil chemotaxis and transendothelial migration.
