WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – The video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) approach to lobectomy is associated with less pain and cytokine production and preserves pulmonary function better than the standard approach.
The finding is reported in the August issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery by Dr. Itaru Nagahiro and colleagues from Okayama University in Japan. They assessed the postoperative outcomes of 22 patients who underwent a VATS or standard lobectomy for stage I peripheral lung cancers.
Up to 2 weeks after surgery, VATS patients had significantly less pain than standard lobectomy patients, the researchers report. In addition, VATS patients experienced a significantly greater and faster recovery of FVC, FEV1, and vital capacity.
VATS patients had significantly lower serum levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 on the day of surgery than standard approach patients, the investigators point out.
"Although lobectomy by the VATS procedure has been controversial because the adequacy of cancer excision by VATS has been questioned, some reports have shown that the survival of patients undergoing VATS lobectomy with mediastinal lymph node dissection was comparable to or better than the survival expected for lung cancer patients undergoing thoracotomy," the researchers point out.
