According to the results of this American study the increased risk of cardiac arrest and ventricular arrhythmia found in the study in patients with treated schizophrenia could be due to the disease or its treatment.
The researchers carried out a cohort study of outpatients using 1993 to 1996 data from 3 US Medicaid programmes. The study involved patients with schizophrenia treated with clozapine, haloperidol, risperidone, or thioridazine, a control group of patients with glaucoma, and a control group of patients with psoriasis.
The main outcome measure used in the study was the diagnosis of cardiac arrest or ventricular arrhythmia.
