A diet that includes cereal high in processed wheat fiber does not improve markers of glycemic control or risk factors for coronary heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a report in the September issue of Diabetes Care.
In a crossover trial, Dr. David J. A. Jenkins from St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, and colleagues randomly assigned 23 subjects with type 2 diabetes to two 3-month periods of a diet that included breakfast cereal and bread high in wheat fiber or a low fiber diet.
