In patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the presence of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction indicates an increased risk of progression to severe heart failure and death, a study in the January 23rd issue of The New England Journal of Medicine indicates.
In a telephone interview with Reuters Health, lead author Dr. Martin S. Maron of Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston said: “What we have shown for the first time is that obstruction in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy matters in the sense that it is a major player dictating progression to heart failure and death. That has never been shown before in any large-scale multicenter trial.”
