Nuchal thickness above the median in midtrimester is associated with an increased risk of congenital heart defects in chromosomally normal fetuses, according to a report in the November issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Ray O. Bahado-Singh, of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, in Ohio, and colleagues examined nuchal thickness measurements in 3003 fetuses for which postnatal heart evaluations were available. “Stepwise logistic regression analysis was used to determine the significant predictors of heart defect among nuchal thickness and epidemiologic risk factors,” the team explains.
