Increasing folic acid intake to lower concentrations of homocysteine would significantly reduce the risk for ischemic heart disease, deep vein thrombosis and stroke, according to the results of a meta-analysis reported in the November 23rd issue of the British Medical Journal.
“For quite some time an association between homocysteine and cardiovascular disease has been recognized, but there has been considerable doubt as to whether this association is causal,” lead author Dr. David S. Wald told Reuters Health. “The work we have done provides the evidence to show that it is,” he added.
