Treatment with C1-inhibitor for 48 hours after a myocardial infarction (MI) may reduce the amount of myocardial injury that occurs, according to a report published in the November 1st issue of the European Heart Journal.
In animal models of MI, complement inhibition with C1-inhibitor therapy has been shown to reduce the myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury that typically occurs, the authors note. Although C1-inhibitor therapy has been tested in humans with a variety of inflammation-related conditions, there are no published studies on its effects in humans with acute MI.
