Radial and ulnar overgrowth are related to the location of non-physeal forearm fractures, European researchers have found. Overgrowth was also related to handedness in patients, although it was not related to the type of fracture, the age or sex of the patient or the presence or absence of an associated ulnar fracture, say investigators from Hartlepool University in Hartlepool, the United Kingdom and Hospital del Nino Jesus in Madrid, Spain.
They point out that the overgrowth phenomenon has been considered rare in the upper extremity. Outcome analysis was done on 119 patients with forearm fractures that had been treated conservatively. Participants underwent scanograms of both forearms five years after treatment. The definition of discrepancy used in the study was a difference in length of more than 2 millimetres, and positive values of discrepancy were labelled overgrowth.
The researchers report there was no significant relationship between discrepancy and any of the variables considered, including type of fracture, patient age/sex or the presence/absence of associated ulnar fractures….
