Vascular endothelial function does not relate to total antioxidant status or plasma vitamin E concentration achieved by diet in young adulthood. Dr CP Leeson and colleagues at University College London, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust, London, England, came to this conclusion in their study of 326 adults, aged 20 to 28 years.
Although epidemiological evidence suggests an inverse relationship between vitamin E status and coronary heart disease, most intervention studies have failed to confirm this. The intervention studies have mostly been carried out late in the disease process, however. These researchers studied whether dietary vitamin E could prevent the pre-clinical arterial changes in young adults that were relevant to the development of cardiovascular disease.
