Adolescents who experiment with cannabis from an early age are more likely to use other illegal drugs later in life and have an increased risk of suffering from either drug or alcohol addiction, according to the results of a study published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA 2003; 289: 427-433).
Researchers examined the association between early cannabis use and subsequent progression to use of other drugs and drug abuse amongst a sample of 311 young adult same-sex twins. The median age was 30 years and in each pair one twin had a history of cannabis use before the age of 17 years.
