Less Intensive Care Needed For Subset Of Primary Angiitis Of Central Nervous System Patients

There is a subset of patients with primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS) who require less intensive treatment than has been traditionally used for this condition.

 This is the view of researchers at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, United States, following a study of patients meeting the clinical description for benign angiopathy of the CNS (BACNS), a subset of PACNS with favourable outcome and no need for prolonged immunosuppression.

The newly suggested PACNS subset is characterised by acute presentation (most commonly headache), normal to mildly abnormal cerebral spinal fluid findings, female predominance and highly abnormal cerebral angiography (reversible after treatment), say these investigators.
