A summary of a Cochrane review of data compiled from 176 studies of metformin involving over 26,000 participants that received metformin or control treatment.
Pooled results showed no cases of fatal or non-fatal lactic acidosis and no differences in blood lactate concentrations. It is concluded that metformin does not increase the risk for lactic acidosis or increase blood lactate concentrations compared with placebo or other hypoglycaemic treatments.
In the commentary the author highlights another population-based study that identified 2 cases of lactic acidosis among almost 12,000 people that received metformin prescriptions over a 15-year period.
