Venlafaxine (Effexor) is more effective than SSRIs for depression

A summary of a meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Psychiatry (2002; 180: 396-404). The authors included data from 32 studies involving 5562 patients.

It was shown that when grouped by drug class venlafaxine was more effective than SSRIs but did not differ from tricyclic agents. It is calculated that for every 19 patients (11 to 63) treated with venlafaxine instead of another antidepressant there will be one additional responder at 10 weeks and for every 14 patients (9 to 29) treated there will be one additional patient in remission.

 In the commentary the author questions whether the possible recruitment of SSRI-unresponsive patients may have biased the results in favour of venlafaxine. He also questions the ability of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale to measure treatment effects that matter to patients.
