Purdue Pharma LP said on Thursday that it has prevailed in another case filed over its trade practices for the painkiller OxyContin (oxycodone).
OxyContin is designed to fight pain over a sustained period, but its time-release mechanism can be foiled by abusers who crush the tablets and ingest, snort, or inject the drug, resulting in a high similar to the one produced by heroin. In mid-April 2002, the US Drug Enforcement Agency said that OxyContin may have contributed to more than 400 deaths over a 2-year period.
