One month after undergoing cardiac surgery, 10% of patients will have a pleural effusion that occupies more than 25% of the hemithorax, according to a report published in the December 15th issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Such effusions often produce dyspnea and most resolve over the next few months with one or two thoracentesis sessions, lead author Dr. Richard W. Light, from Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, and colleagues note.
