Carvedilol appears to reduce the inappropriate elevated ventilation levels seen in heart failure patients during exercise, say Italian researchers.
Beta-blockers are known to improve the clinical condition and cardiac function of heart failure patients, but their effect on exercise capacity was not known until now. Since overactive reflexes from ergoreceptors and chemoreceptors inappropriately elevates ventilation, the investigators suggested beta-blockers might induce their positive clinical effects through a reduction in ventilation.
In this double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study, 15 patients were evaluated at the Centro Cardiologico, Monzino, Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico, Istituto di Cardiologia, Universita di Milano, in Milan, Italy.
