Medicare Coverage Has Not Increased Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates


Colorectal cancer screening is underused in the Washington State Medicare population, and utilization rates were not substantially affected by insurance coverage for these tests, University of Washington researchers report. “Colorectal cancer screening tests are underutilized in older adults eligible for Medicare coverage,” Dr. Cynthia W. Ko told Reuters Health.

“This is true for all demographic subgroups including men vs. women and different ethnic groups. This underutilization cannot be attributed solely to insurance coverage of these tests, since utilization did not increase with the beginning of insurance coverage in 1998,” she said.
