For the treatment of mania of bipolar disorder, both divalproex (Depakote) and olanzapine (Zyprexa) were equally effective in a randomized, double-blind trial reported in the December issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. However, divalproex was better tolerated with fewer side-effects.
“This study further confirms the safety and efficacy of Depakote, which continues to be among the most-prescribed treatments for acute mania,” lead author John M. Zajecka, MD, from Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, says in a news release.
