For the first 1 to 3 years after transplantation, renal transplant recipients are more likely to sustain a hip fracture than their peers still on dialysis, according to a recent report. However, after this period, transplant recipients appear to be at lower risk.
Renal failure is associated with a high risk of hip fracture, study author Dr. Catherine Stehman-Breen, from the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, and colleagues note. However, the differential effect of dialysis and renal transplantation on this risk has been unclear.
