Endoscopic Therapy May Replace Surgery in Treatment of Early Esophageal Cancer


In the future, local endoscopic therapy may replace radical resection as the recommended treatment for early Barrett’s esophageal cancer, findings from a new study suggest.

Dr. Andrea May, from Dr. Horst Schmidt Kliniken in Wiesbaden, Germany, assessed the outcomes of 115 patients with high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia or Barrett’s early adenocarcinoma who were treated with a variety of endoscopic modalities. The average follow-up period was 34 months.
