According to results of a population-based study, continuous combined HRT is associated with an increased risk for breast cancer among postmenopausal women, however the risk reverts to normal once combined HRT is stopped.
Researchers from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Maryland examined data on HRT use by 1870 postmenopausal women diagnosed with breast cancer and by 1953 controls.
For current use of continuous combined HRT for 5 or more years the odds ratio for developing breast cancer was 1.54 compared with non-use and the risk for breast cancer increased with the duration of combined HRT use (p = 0.01).
