Findings from a small pilot study indicate that treatment with thalidomide can decrease tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha levels in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and improve cardiac performance.
Recent reports have shown that plasma levels of inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-alpha and interleukin-6, are increased in patients with CHF, Dr. Lars Gullestad, from Baerum Hospital in Oslo, Norway, and colleagues note in the November issue of the American Heart Journal. Therefore, therapies that can attenuate immune activation may be useful for treating CHF.
