As few as four annual mass treatments with single doses of diethylcarbamazine can reduce rates of lymphatic filariasis by 86% to 98%, according to a report by an international research team published in the December 5th issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. James W. Kazura of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, and colleagues initiated treatment efforts in Papua New Guinea in 1994. Subjects age 5 years or older were randomized to treatment with four single annual doses of diethylcarbamazine 6 mg/kg plus ivermectin 400 g/kg, or diethylcarbamazine alone.
