Cardiothoracic Surgeons Favour Stentless Aortic Valves

Patients who need concomitant procedures may also benefit from the “excellent” haemodynamic characteristics of stentless valves, report cardiothoracic surgeons at the University Hospitals of Leicester, England.

The surgeons recommend stentless aortic valve replacement as the treatment of choice for patients older than 60 years and those with small aortic roots. Noting that whether to perform stentless aortic valve replacements was not well established, the surgeons sought to determine the outcome after implanting aortic valve replacements with 11 types of stentless xenograft valves.

Between 1996 and 2001, 404 patients of mean age 70.4 years–20 of whom had previous aortic valve replacements–underwent stentless aortic valve replacements, all performed by the same surgeon. Concomitant procedures were performed in 132 patients. A subcoronary implantation technique was used in 302 cases, complete root replacement in 62 cases and a modified Bentall-De Bono procedure in 33 cases. Follow-up was for an average of 19.4 months.
