Animal studies show that prolonged administration of adrenomedullin has beneficial, compensatory actions in heart failure. These findings, the authors say, support current thinking that adrenomedullin plays a protective role during hemodynamic compromise and has therapeutic potential in human heart failure.
“Adrenomedullin is a novel endogenous peptide with multiple actions, the net effect of which is to promote reduction of blood pressure and volume,” lead investigator Dr. Miriam T. Rademaker of The Christchurch School of Medicine in New Zealand told Reuters Health.
