Bilirubin, long considered simply a waste product of hemoglobin degradation, actually provides the most powerful antioxidant protection mammalian cells have.
As such, bilirubin represents a possible new therapeutic target in stroke and other disorders that result from oxidative injury, investigators suggest in the early online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science for November 25.
