skeletal disorders can be diagnosed with simple inexpensive screening


Many postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, but who are otherwise healthy, have undiagnosed skeletal disorders, researchers report. But such disorders can be diagnosed with simple inexpensive screening, says the team from Saint Barnabas Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease Center in Livingston, New Jersey.

 Dr. Marjorie Luckey and colleagues studied 664 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. From this group, the researchers identified 173 women who did not have a history of disease or of taking medications that adversely affect bone. These women had also undergone laboratory testing that included complete blood counts, chemistry profile, 24-hour urinary calcium, 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels and serum PTH.
