Gabapentin May Reduce Hot Flashes

A small pilot study reported in the November issue of the Mayo Clinic Proceedings demonstrated the benefit of gabapentin for the treatment of hot flashes in postmenopausal women.

“Although a double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial should be conducted to better elucidate the efficacy and toxicity of gabapentin in patients with hot flashes, the available data suggest that gabapentin is a reasonable treatment to consider in patients with hot flashes if they do not wish to use hormonal therapy,” write Charles L. Loprinzi, MD, from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and colleagues.

In this prospective, single-arm clinical trial, women with postmenopausal hot flashes had one baseline week followed by four weeks of gabapentin treatment, increasing in dose during the first three weeks from 300 mg to 600 mg to 900 mg daily. The women either had a history of breast cancer with no active disease or had other reasons not to take estrogen.
