Risk Of Suicide Can Continue For Two Decades

A risk of suicide can continue for at least 20 years among women and men with a history of attempted suicide or parasuicide.

This has been found among a cohort of 140 patients who were traced for 22 years after they presented to a central London teaching hospital following an episode of parasuicide in the late 1970s. Dr Gary Jenkins and colleagues at the Department of Psychiatry, East Ham Memorial Hospital, combined deaths that were recorded as “suicide” with deaths in which data on the death certificate suggested that the cause of death was “probable suicide.”

The researchers found that the rate of suicide plus probable suicide was 5.9 per 1,000 per year in the first five years, 4.7 per 1,000 per year between 10 and 15 years, 5.0 per 1,000 per year between 15 and 20 years, and 6.8 per 1,000 per year in the final three years. The rate did not decline with time.
