Meta-analysis of trials of emergency department treatment of acute severe asthma indicates that IV beta2-agonists are not helpful and may pose risks to patients.
In the October issue of Chest, Dr. Andrew H. Travers of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, and colleagues note that emergency asthma treatment guidelines in North America and in the UK recommend initial use of inhaled beta-agonists.
