Gel Lubricant Does Not Adversely Affect Pap Smear Results

Although the common teaching is that doctors should not use lubrication when obtaining specimens for cervical cytology, women have complained that the pain is significant. Two separate studies reported in the November issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology show that water-soluble gel lubricant placed on the speculum or in the introitus did not adversely affect results. One group discusses the limitations of their study, while the other is adamant about abandoning the no-lubricant policy.

“The move to evidence-based practice supports challenging dogma such as the avoidance of lubricant before performing a Papanicolaou smear,” write W. Benson Harer, Jr, MD, from Riverside Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, California, and colleagues.
