Polyarticular Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritics Show Frequent, Early Radiographic Abnormalities

Abnormal hand and wrist radiographs occur very early and at a very high frequency in the course of polyarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (polyJRA), United States researchers have found.

It is now critical to determine to what extent these radiographic abnormalities correlate with clinical outcomes, urge Dr Tom Mason and colleagues from the Division of Rheumatology, Departments of Radiology and Health Sciences Research, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.

 This determination is key because radiographs of small joints are an important tool in assessing outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and there are clinical similarities between RA and polyJRA, the researchers add. In this study, investigators identified 60 cases of newly diagnosed polyJRA from a review of 159 medical records.
