Acetaminophen, NSAIDs Seem to Increase Risk of Hypertension in Women

The use of acetaminophen and of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but not aspirin, are strongly associated with the risk of developing hypertension in women. According to the report in the Archives of Internal Medicine for October 28, even infrequent use raises the risk of high blood pressure.

Dr. Gary C. Curhan and associates of Harvard Medical School identified 80,020 participants in the Nurses’ Health Study II who in 1995 had no previous history of hypertension. The subjects’ frequency of use of the three classes of analgesics was collected by mailed questionnaire in 1995.
