Data from the Framingham Heart Study reveals that a diagnosis of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is associated with a more benign profile of cardiac abnormalities than previously reported from referral-based series.
Dr. Robert A. Levine from Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, and colleagues collected data on 150 subjects with possible MVP and on 150 matched subjects without MVP from 3491 patients in the study. The researchers classified patients by leaflet morphology. Based on that criteria, 46 patients had classic MVP, 37 had neoclassic MVP and the rest had no MVP.
