Schering-Plough Corp. and Merck and Co. Inc. late on Friday announced that the US Food and Drug Administration had approved Zetia as a stand-alone cholesterol-lowering treatment, as well as for use alongside any of the popular currently marketed statins.
Officials of a joint venture between the two New Jersey-based firms said that Zetia works by preventing the intestines from absorbing cholesterol, whereas statins inhibit the liver’s natural production of cholesterol
