Compared with pregnant women who do not smoke, those who do have significantly lower serum concentrations of folate, Canadian researchers report.
Dr. Sarah D. McDonald and colleagues from Ottawa Hospital, studied folate levels in 80 women–40 smokers and 40 non-smokers–in the early stages of pregnancy.
Among the women who smoked, serum folate levels were 22.7 nmol/L, significantly lower than among those who did not smoke (29.4 nmol/L, p = 0.001), the researchers found. Women who smoked also had lower red blood cell concentrations of folate (765 nmol/L versus 905 nmol/L). This difference was not significant, they add.
