Modern CNS-Active Agents Increase Elderly Women’s Risk of Falling

Elderly women who use central nervous system (CNS)-active medications are at increased risk for falling compared with women not using such drugs.

 Furthermore, investigators report in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society for October, substituting short-acting benzodiazepines for longer-acting agents at best only marginally decreases fall risk. And using selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) instead of older tricyclic antidepressants may actually increase the risk.
