In preschool children with recurrent intermittent wheeze and who are sensitized to aeroallergens, treatment with fluticasone propionate decreases airway resistance and improves bronchodilator responsiveness.
For their double-blind, 6-week crossover trial conducted at The Royal London Hospital in London, Drs. Caroline S. Pao and Sheila A. McKenzie recruited 61 children, median age 3.5 years, with intermittent wheeze. Skin prick testing showed that 14 were sensitized to at least one allergen. Forty-four subjects completed the crossover study and a 10-week extension. Treatment comprised fluticasone propionate 100 g b.i.d. or placebo.
