Estren, a new synthetic compound, reverses bone loss in mice without affecting reproductive tissues, scientists in Little Rock, Arkansas, report in the October 25th issue of Science. They suggest that estren may provide therapy for osteoporosis without causing the adverse effects associated with sex steroids.
Dr. Stavros C. Manolagas and associates explain that estrogens and androgens exert nongenotropic actions on bone and other tissue that are independent of their activity on sex organs. Using gonadectomized mice, they found that estren (4-estren-3-alpha,17-beta-diol) reproduces the nongenotropic actions, but that it has none of the classical transcriptional activity associated with sex steroids.
