Eccentric LVH in Dialysis Patients Seems Resistant to ACE-Inhibitor…

Among chronic hemodialysis patients, eccentric left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is less responsive to treatment with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor therapy than concentric LVH, according to a report in the October issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.

 Also, eccentric LVH is associated with a higher incidence of adverse cardiovascular events. “In addition to the absolute magnitude of left ventricular mass (LVM), the geometric pattern of the left ventricle might help explain the different tendency toward LVH regression seen under effective therapy in chronic hemodialysis patients,” Dr. Giuseppe Cannella, of Azienda Ospedale San Martino, Genova, Italy, and colleagues note.
