Reduced Insulin Sensitivity In Some Children Born Small For Gestational Age

Children born small for gestational age and who show catch-up growth with a high body mass index have reduced insulin sensitivity at age nine which could contribute to an increased risk of noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus later in life, investigators suggest.

There are, however, no differences in glucose tolerance or beta-cell function between children who were small and children who were normal for their gestational age.
