Quality of Care, Information Technology Will Shape Family Medicine’s Future

 Within the coming decade, the viability of family medicine will “depend entirely” on the quality of care that physicians provide to their patients and their ability to demonstrate it, predicted Joseph E. Scherger, MD, founding dean of Florida State University’s College of Medicine, Tallahassee. If family physicians are unable to prove this capability, “we’re going to fade away,” he warned.

Dr. Scherger’s remarks, delivered here yesterday at the American Academy of Family Physicians Annual Scientific Assembly, focused on the steps that family physicians must take to reduce medical errors in outpatient settings, where care is typically delivered, and to create a “culture of safety” in their practices. Only then can family medicine fulfill its key functions of managing knowledge and relationships with patients, he said.
