Extended Warfarin Therapy May Reduce Thrombotic Risks After Hip Surgery

Patients who undergo hip arthroplasty and continue warfarin therapy after hospital discharge are less likely to experience thromboembolic complications than those who stop taking the drug on discharge, according to a report published in the September 23rd issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

 Several reports have shown that extended therapy with unfractionated or low-molecular-weight heparin reduces the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients who have undergone major orthopedic surgery. In contrast, relatively few studies have addressed whether warfarin therapy beyond hospital discharge is beneficial.
