Back Exercises Reduce Risk of Vertebral Fracture Even After Exercises are Discontinued

Post-menopausal women who perform back strengthening exercises to reduce the risk of vertebral fractures can continue to benefit even ten years following discontinuation, say researchers.

“The results were surprising,” said one of the study authors, Mehrsheed Sinaki, M.D. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, United States, presenting the results at the 24th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research held here.

The /follow-up evaluation looked at fifty women, aged 58 to 75 years, who had completed a two-year, randomized controlled trial 10 years earlier. The purpose of the follow-up was to assess the long-term protective effect of strong back muscles on women and their risk for vertebral fracture, Dr. Sinaki said.

Twenty-seven women who had participated in the back strengthening exercises for two years were compared to 23 women who had served as controls.
