Environmental exposure to endotoxin may influence the risk of developing hay fever, atopic asthma, and atopic sensitization, according to a report published in the September 19th issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
The effects of early endotoxin exposure appear to be varied. One recent report found a direct relationship between early exposure and wheezing during infancy, while another found evidence that such exposure protects against eczema (see Reuters Health stories December 21, 2001 and March 9, 2001).
